The Return of Turntables and Vinyl Records

Posted on: April 16, 2010 In: Blog

To commemorate the beginning of our blog, we feel it is fitting to address a quality sound medium that was popular when Sounds Fantastic was established in 1979: vinyl records.

Although vinyl records left the mainstream in 1991, they have never disappeared completely. Now, as we start to rediscover our appreciation for the highest quality audio, vinyl records are making a comeback. In 2008, 2.9 million units were shipped, more than in any of the previous ten years.

Vinyl records are analog recordings, or sound captured in its original form. Digital recordings, such as CDs, DVDs and MP3s are reproduced sound. When sound is duplicated, the original sound wave can not be captured in its entirety. Therefore the audio quality of an analog recording can not be recreated in digital form.

While digital media may have the upper hand in convenience, analog still delivers the best listening experience possible, second only to a live performance. If you want to enjoy your music to the fullest; from crystal clear sound, to remarkable packaging: go retro… go vinyl.

To get your favorite albums on vinyl record, head to Spin-It or Frank’s Music in Moncton, or your local music store. If you don’t have a turntable leftover from the 70’s, you can get a new Denon turntable (available at Sounds Fantastic) for $150 – $400.
